Hunger & Homeless here in the USA
Did you know?
In the United States, 12 million children live in households who have to skip meals to make ends meet. Therefore, one in 10 households in the U.S. are living with hunger or at risk for hunger.
Also in just 11 counties in ohio, there are over 45,000 people living in poverty. It is estimated that over 10 million pounds of food will be needed to serve those who are in need.Around the world, poverty is pervasive: one billion people lived in poverty in 2001. Poverty and hunger are undeniably linked, so that solving the hunger problem by feeding people, without attacking the poverty problem, does not address the root cause of poverty.
Many homeless individuals will eventually find jobs and homes, and others will take refuge in shelters and satisfy their hunger at soup kitchens. Yet, many others will continue to wander the streets cold, hungry, and hopeless. America’s shelters are simply not large enough, and our food pantries are not stocked enough, to take care of every homeless and hungry person.
Every night more than 1 million children in America face the dark with no place to call home. They are hungry, anxious and often exposed to violence.
There are more homeless children in America now than at any other time since the Great Depression. About 40% of America's homeless are now women and their children - the fastest growing homeless group.You can help feed the hungry children of America. The week before Thanksgiving is always National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless.
Also Many schools, churches and community groups will use this holiday as an opportunity to host food drives.
You, alone, can make a difference. Here are just 3 ways you can help;
1.Check Out Hunger
This scanning fund drive takes place in grocery stores across the country, usually from October through February. You’ll see $2, $3, and $5 donation slips at the check-out counter. Choose one, and hand it to the cashier. Once your slip is scanned, you will have donated 100% of that amount to your local food bank. You’d be amazed, I think, to learn that for every $2 donation made, food banks are able to distribute $25 worth of food to hungry and homeless people.2.Go Food Shopping for The Hungry & then take directly to our local food bank
3.Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen
Please help feed the hungry, & shelter the homeless. The holidays are always a good time to start.. We can make a difference. Thanks
